Clara Vella
I am Clara Vella, editor of MaltaMGA and a Malta-based licensing and compliance specialist. This is my personal editorial notebook: my background, selected writing, a practical record-design note and a route for corrections.
I have worked in legal and regulatory roles since 2011, moved into iGaming licensing and compliance in 2014, and have worked independently as a senior licensing and compliance consultant since 2022. My subject areas include MGA B2C and B2B licensing, regulatory approvals, corporate governance, AML, KYC and responsible gambling.
At MaltaMGA, I maintain the guide, check licence and enforcement information against original regulatory records, and review corrections. My aim is to make a source’s scope understandable: which entity or website it concerns, what it establishes and what remains uncertain.
MaltaMGA is independent, non-commercial public information. It is separate from the Malta Gaming Authority and gambling operators, and does not recommend where to gamble. These notes are public explanations rather than advice on an individual legal matter.
A single title such as “licence check” can hide several different subjects. A legal entity, a trading name and a website address are not interchangeable fields. When a reader later asks what was actually checked, a descriptive title alone is too vague to answer.
I prefer a small structured note with one field for each question. The following is an illustrative record design, not a real licence, operator, domain check or regulatory finding. No live check has been performed for this example.
legal_entity: ILLUSTRATIVE ENTITY — NOT A REAL OPERATORlicence_reference: ILLUSTRATIVE-NOT-A-LICENCEdomain: example.invalidstatus: not_checkedsource_url: not recordedsource_stated_date: unknownobserved_at: not recordedThe conspicuous placeholders matter. An example should not look like a real positive finding. The reserved domain makes it clear that there is no operating website behind this record.
The next decision is how to represent uncertainty. “Not checked” differs from “checked and no matching entry found.” A missing observation time differs from the date printed in a source. If the source carries an earlier decision date, preserve that date separately from the time you actually read it. Substituting today’s date would create an appearance of freshness without the underlying check.
Before publishing a conclusion from a real note, return to the original source, compare the exact subjects, and record the scope of the observation. If two names differ, leave the difference visible and explain it. If you cannot establish a connection, retain that uncertainty rather than merging the fields until they appear to agree.
